Black and White – an Artist’s Studio, Alyth, Perth and Kinross

Martin McGuiness is a fine artist whose dramatic work includes large scale mural painting, portraits and site specific abstract designs. The studio is a permanent workshop for him to create, linked closely with the landscape and light of eastern Perthshire.

It is a low budget, self–build project. Martin worked closely with us to conceive a building that is as bold as much of his artwork. Stained black externally to emphasise the grain of the horizontal Scottish larch cladding and lined with white painted horizontal boards internally the strongly graphic nature of the building is balanced with the natural textures of the wood. The building sits in the grounds of a Victorian garden, overhung by a large copper beech and looking out over the hills – the dramatic setting a foil to the drama and scale of the work to be created inside.

The studio will also be used for exhibitions, residencies and workshops. Watch this space for more information.
